Describe yourself to us

I have spent my career in accountancy from turf accountant, working in practice, management accounting in the NHS through to the last 20 years spent working for professional bodies.

During this time, I have developed extensive experience in compliance, anti-money laundering legislation and requirements which has resulted in my current role at the IFA.

What is the most interesting part of your job?

The monitoring process; this presents many different approaches from firms when selected for AML reviews that are never the same. I also enjoy presenting at workshops and events and engaging members in all aspects of AML and public practice regulations.

Most embarrassing/funny moment in your career?

As a night auditor in a hotel, I was presented with MC Hammer and his entourage at reception all adorned in nothing but identical swimming trunks, one of whom had a ghetto blaster booming MC Hammer’s tracks who asked me: ‘Which way to the beach man?’ I directed them to the leisure pool and opened it for them at 3am!

What is the most memorable/rewarding moment in your career?

Having completed an AML review on a firm, I was later contacted to thank me for helping them develop procedures that enabled the firm to spot and avoid becoming involved with an organised crime group – possibly keeping the member from a spell in prison.

Favourite food?

I really enjoy most things that have fresh chillies, including Mexican and Indian food, however my wife would probably state my favourite food is my next meal!

Who is your role model, in life or in your career, and why?

I really admire anybody that has achieved great things from apparent adversity. Naturalist Chris Packham who, despite being bullied as a child and then being diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, has achieved great things in his career and overcome adversity in his personal life.

How do you spend time away from your role?

I enjoy family time and love pottering in my allotment where I try and grow many things - including chillies. I am a Cub Scout leader having been an active cub, scout and venture scout in my youth and love nothing more. I am also a cricket, football and rugby league fan having played all when younger.

Why is the future bright with the IFA?

The team the IFA have to support and develop members is first class, and I am proud to be able to play a part in its continual development. I believe the IFA is highly regarded by government and other professional bodies as having excellent standards and processes, so the future looks rosy for current and future IFA members.
